Dreaming of Switzerland

I am a professional athlete. It's strange to finally be able to say that out loud when it used to be the dream of the 12-year-old girl that would work-out in the rain alone at Hickey Park in Coquitlam, BC, imagining every puddle was a defender and every shot a game-winner. Back then, "I want to be a professional athlete" was something that I would say with self-conscious anxiety, almost afraid to give substance to a dream that seemed so far away.

The journey to self-confidence as a female athlete is not simple. Everyone will doubt you. The friends that cannot fathom why you would workout instead of spending the day at the lake with them, family members who worry you won't be able to make enough money, and internet trolls who are so caught up in their misogyny that they refuse to celebrate your success. They will all challenge your dreams and try to pick them apart. People just don't believe in female athletes the same way as male athletes. For us, it is a constant battle to prove the validity of our dreams, let alone the worthiness of our talent.

I'm lucky. I've been fortunate enough to be surrounded by people who believed in me, oftentimes more than I believed in myself. There are far more names than I can give credit to here, so I won't even try, you know who you are.

I want you to know that I appreciate everything you've done. Without you, that little girl would still be dreaming instead of signing her first professional contract to play in Switzerland for Elfic Fribourg. She would probably be working at some corporate job, living a cookie-cutter life. However, because of you, I now get to dream about swiss chocolate and the alps while preparing for the next steps in a career that is more of an exciting adventure than a job.

I'm not sure what comes next, but I know it's going to be amazing. Thank you for being here to share it with me!
